The Lanzhou Waterwheel Expo Park is a specialised cultural park on the southern bank of the Yellow River, within the broader riverside green belt that runs along the Lanzhou waterfront. The park is dedicated to the history, technology, and continuing presence of the traditional Chinese waterwheel, with a particular focus on the Lanzhou-style Yellow River waterwheel that once lined this section of the river. For international visitors, the park offers a focused, accessible introduction to one of the most distinctive pieces of technological heritage in northwestern China.
The traditional Lanzhou waterwheel was a large, vertical, wooden water-lifting device, used historically to raise water from the Yellow River for irrigation and urban use. The scale of these wheels was considerable: individual wheels could reach many metres in diameter, and the structures were a defining feature of the Lanzhou riverscape for centuries. The expo park preserves and presents this tradition through working examples of the Lanzhou waterwheel, alongside representative examples of waterwheel designs from other regions of China, allowing visitors to compare the different technical traditions within a single site.
The layout of the park is organised around these working wheels, which are set within landscaped grounds that include ponds, flowerbeds, sculptures, and walking paths. The design encourages visitors to move slowly between the wheels, observing the operation of each and reading the interpretive panels on the history and technology of the device. The combination of moving machinery, water, and green planting gives the park a distinctive character quite different from a conventional museum, and the site is particularly popular with families and with visitors interested in traditional technology.
For international visitors, the Lanzhou Waterwheel Expo Park is best treated as a focused one-to-two-hour stop, generally combined with a longer walk along the Lanzhou Yellow River waterfront. The park is accessible by public transport and is located close to several of the other central Lanzhou attractions, including the Iron Bridge, the Mother Yellow River Sculpture, and the Binhe Road promenade. The most rewarding time to visit is during the warmer months, when the wheels are operating and the surrounding gardens are in full leaf. Allow around ninety minutes for a relaxed visit.

The Lanzhou Waterwheel Expo Park lies on the south bank of the Yellow River along South Binhe East Road, part of the riverside green corridor. Built around the Lanzhou great Yellow River waterwheel, the park gathers waterwheels of many kinds from across the country to show their forms and differences, set among ponds, flowers and sculptures. Several tall timber wheels turn slowly in the river current, lifting water into the canal and recalling the "city of waterwheels" of the Ming and Qing, while the park also serves as the living showcase and heritage base for the national ICH Lanzhou Yellow River Large Waterwheel Making Technique.
관람 안내: Standing on the riverbank one watches the ten-metre timber wheels turn slowly in the current, scoops splashing water up into the canal, and one is carried back to the old Golden City lined with wheels; the park houses a making-technique heritage base where one may watch craftsmen work the great axle, spokes and scoops, and try the steps by hand. A few steps along the river bring the Zhongshan Bridge and Baita Mountain, the most concentrated stretch of riverside road for taking in Lanzhou's Yellow River culture.
