Lanzhou Altstraße

Lanzhou Old Street (Lanzhou Lao Jie) is a large mixed-use cultural and commercial district in central Lanzhou, developed as a modern reinterpretation of a traditional Chinese commercial streetscape. Designed as the city's first major "always-open" commercial precinct, it brings together national-trend brands, late-night food and entertainment, fashion retail, experience-based formats, restaurants, and leisure facilities in a single integrated environment. For international visitors, it is one of the clearest windows onto contemporary urban leisure culture in a northwestern Chinese city.

The street's design draws on the visual vocabulary of the traditional Chinese commercial street, with rebuilt period architecture, tiled roofs, lanterns, and decorative detailing that reference the vernacular building traditions of the Gansu region. Behind the period façades, however, the offering is firmly contemporary: fashion brands, lifestyle stores, modern dining, and entertainment venues aimed at a younger demographic. The combination is a familiar one in modern Chinese urban development, but Lanzhou Old Street is among the most ambitious examples of its type in northwestern China.

The programming of the district is organised around a four-character development strategy emphasising energy, popularity, authenticity, and flavour. In practice, this translates into a strong emphasis on late-night activity, with food stalls, performance spaces, and entertainment venues keeping the district active well past midnight. For international visitors, Lanzhou Old Street is best treated as an evening destination and a relaxed place to eat, walk, and observe the contemporary urban culture of Lanzhou. It is not a substitute for the city's historic sites, but it complements them by showing how Lanzhou presents itself in the present.
