Gelber-Fluss-Turm

The Yellow River Tower (Huang He Lou) is a large cultural and sightseeing complex in the Matan district of Lanzhou's Qilihe area, built as a modern landmark dedicated to the culture of the Yellow River, the history of the Silk Road, and the historical identity of Lanzhou itself. Since its completion in 2019, the tower has become one of the most visible built landmarks in the city, standing on the banks of the Yellow River as a contemporary counterpart to the great pavilions of classical Chinese tradition. For international visitors, it offers one of the best elevated views over Lanzhou and the river.

The complex is built on a substantial footprint, with the main tower and supporting wings providing tens of thousands of square metres of cultural, exhibition, and visitor space. The main tower rises to a height of roughly ninety-three metres, organised over more than a dozen above-ground levels. The layout is designed as a single integrated experience, with cultural displays, viewing galleries, performance spaces, food and beverage facilities, and multimedia installations distributed across the floors. Each level is themed around a particular aspect of Yellow River culture, Silk Road history, or Lanzhou local heritage.

The upper floors house some of the most distinctive attractions within the tower. A visitor experience zone occupies several levels, with installations on the history of the Yellow River and the role of Lanzhou within the broader regional and Silk Road networks. A dedicated exhibition on the Yellow River itself occupies one level, with displays on the geology, ecology, and cultural significance of the river. The upper viewing platform offers a panoramic view of Lanzhou, taking in the river, the city, and the surrounding mountains, and is one of the best single vantage points for understanding the urban geography of the city.

For international visitors, the Yellow River Tower is best treated as a focused half-day activity, ideally timed to coincide with one of the open-air evening performances staged in the surrounding complex. The combination of the indoor exhibits and the evening light show captures, in compressed form, how contemporary Lanzhou presents its cultural identity. Allow three to four hours for the visit. The tower is easily accessible by public transport and pairs well with a walk along the Yellow River waterfront, the nearby Iron Bridge, and the broader Qilihe riverbank district.
