The Yulong River Scenic Area is the quieter, more intimate counterpart to the Li River, following a tributary of the Li that winds through the countryside of Yangshuo county among rice paddies, karst peaks, and old stone villages. Where the Li River carries large cruise boats and is celebrated for its dramatic, monumental scenery, the Yulong is shallower, slower, and more pastoral, and its scenery has earned it the nickname "Little Li River" among Chinese travelers who come here for a gentler, closer-to-the-water experience.

The river winds for many kilometers through the Yangshuo countryside, its banks lined with bamboo groves, farm plots, and the occasional old stone bridge, with karst peaks rising directly from the floodplain on either side. Along the route, the river passes through small rural settlements whose daily life — water buffalo working the fields, farmers tending vegetable plots, fishermen with cormorants — gives the landscape a lived-in, agricultural character that contrasts with the more heavily managed scenery of the main Li River. The water is clear and slow-moving, and on still days the reflections of the surrounding peaks mirror almost perfectly in the surface, producing the kind of pastoral karst imagery that has made the Yangshuo countryside one of the most photographed landscapes in China.

For foreign visitors, the Yulong River is the principal reason to extend a Guilin trip into the Yangshuo area, and the best way to experience it is on a bamboo raft that drifts slowly downstream, giving passengers ample time to absorb the scenery and to photograph the bridges, peaks, and villages along the banks. Cycling and electric scooters along the riverside paths offer an alternative for travelers who prefer to explore on land. The area is best visited as a full day or a leisurely half-day, and the countryside rewards travelers who slow down enough to appreciate the texture of the landscape rather than rushing from one named viewpoint to the next. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions, while summer brings lush greenery but also the possibility of higher water levels.
