The Two Rivers and Four Lakes Scenic Area is the connected waterway network at the heart of downtown Guilin, stitching together the Li and Peach Blossom Rivers with four inner-city lakes — Rong, Shan, Gui, and Mulong — to form a navigable ring through the city center. The signature activity is the evening cruise, when the pagodas, bridges, pavilions, and gardens along the banks are lit up in a coordinated nightly display. Boats glide past the Sun and Moon Twin Pagodas rising from Banyan Lake, under illuminated arched bridges of both traditional and contemporary design, and along willow-lined embankments where locals stroll after dinner. The contrast with the wilder karst scenery along the Li River further downstream is deliberate: where the Li River offers dramatic, almost prehistoric peaks, the Two Rivers and Four Lakes route presents a more manicured, urban version of the same landscape, woven into the daily life of the city.

For foreign visitors, the cruise is the most rewarding way to experience the scenic area, and it functions as a gentle, low-effort introduction to Guilin on a first evening in the city. A typical trip lasts roughly an hour and is easiest to combine with a walk through the adjacent lakeside parks before or after boarding. By day, the same lakes and rivers make for pleasant walking and cycling routes, with shaded promenades, pavilions, and the constant backdrop of the karst peaks rising above the rooftops.
