Shangri-La Scenic Area, known in Chinese as Shi Wai Tao Yuan — "the land beyond the world" — is a themed park in the countryside northwest of Yangshuo, built around the imagery of Tao Yuanming's classical Chinese tale "Peach Blossom Spring," in which a fisherman stumbles upon a hidden, idyllic community cut off from the outside world. Rather than a historical site, the park is a constructed attraction that recreates this literary vision using the area's natural karst scenery, lakes, and caves as a backdrop, and it is best approached as a curated interpretation of a literary landscape rather than as a preserved village.

Inside, visitors move through a landscaped setting of hills, waterways, and gardens designed to evoke the secluded, harmonious community described in the original story, incorporating ethnic-minority cultural elements, traditional-style architecture, and staged folk performances that lean into the atmosphere the park is built around. Boat rides through a cave passage are typically part of the experience, echoing the fisherman's journey through a hidden waterway in the original tale and giving the visit a sense of discovery as the landscape opens out beyond the cave. Despite being a man-made attraction, the park makes good use of the genuinely striking countryside surrounding it, and many visitors find the scenery convincing in its own right, independent of the literary framing.

For foreign visitors, the park offers a lighter, more curated experience of the Yangshuo region's landscape and culture, particularly well suited to families with children, mixed-interest groups, or travelers with limited time who want a taste of the area's scenery and folklore without a longer countryside excursion. A visit generally takes two to three hours, making it a manageable half-day stop, and it pairs easily with other attractions in the Yangshuo countryside, such as the Ten-Mile Gallery or the Yulong River, as part of a fuller day trip from Guilin or Yangshuo. Travelers seeking a more authentic encounter with the karst landscape or local village life may prefer the less managed countryside sights, but the park fills a useful niche for those wanting an accessible, story-driven introduction to the region's scenery and literary traditions.
