硇洲島

Naozhou Island is a volcanic island sitting off the eastern approach to Zhanjiang Bay, part of the larger Mazhang district and reachable by a short ferry crossing from the mainland. It is one of the more offbeat destinations on the Guangdong coast, attracting foreign travelers who want to escape resort crowds and experience a working fishing island shaped by lava, salt, and centuries of maritime trade. The island covers a modest area but packs in striking geology, historic lighthouses, and a slow village atmosphere.

The volcanic origins of Naozhou are visible the moment you arrive. Black basalt rocks line the coves, sea cliffs rise sheer on the windward coast, and fertile red soils support smallholdings of bananas, sugarcane, and sweet potatoes. The island's best-known geological feature is the reef platform, a stretch of weathered lava that the sea has carved into sculptural tide pools. At low tide, locals wander out to collect crabs, sea snails, and seaweed, an everyday scene that doubles as a window into traditional coastal livelihoods.

The Naozhou Lighthouse is the island's most famous landmark and one of only two crystal-block lighthouses in the world. Built in the late nineteenth century from prefabricated crystal blocks manufactured in France, it remains in active service and is listed as a nationally protected heritage site. Visitors can walk the base, though the interior is usually closed to casual visits. Nearby, a small memorial marks the brief exile of a Song dynasty emperor who took refuge on the island in the thirteenth century.

Independent travel on Naozhou rewards flexibility. Ferries run from the southeastern mainland, with schedules that shift seasonally and with the weather. Most travelers rent an electric tricycle or hire a local driver to loop between the lighthouse, the volcanic coast, and the fishing villages, where family kitchens turn out some of the freshest squid and grouper in the region. Bring sturdy shoes for the basalt, sun protection, and enough cash for a day, since ATMs are scarce on the island. An early start lets you catch the morning fish market at its most photogenic.
