Bamboo rafting on the Yulong River is the single most popular way to experience the quieter stretches of the Yangshuo karst countryside, and for many international visitors it ends up being the highlight of their entire Guilin trip. Unlike the larger Li River cruises, the Yulong rafts are small, intimate, and slow, carrying only a pair of passengers plus a boatman who poles the raft gently downstream through some of the most photogenic landscapes in southern China.

A typical trip begins at one of the small piers along the Yulong, where rows of motor-assisted bamboo rafts wait under the willow trees. Once aboard, the boatman navigates out into the current and the raft drifts past bamboo groves, rice paddies, and the orchards of the river villages. The river is shallow and clear, with the sandy bottom visible through the water, and the banks slide by close enough to touch. At each of the old stone-arched bridges that cross the river, the raft slides through a narrow span, sometimes with a small drop of water that adds a moment of gentle excitement.

The pace is the point. The raft moves slowly enough to take photographs, to watch egrets hunting in the shallows, and to talk with the boatman through a translation app about village life along the river. The karst pinnacles rise on both sides of the valley, their reflections doubling in the still water, and at each bend in the river a new composition of peaks, fields, and farmhouses opens up. Many travelers describe the trip as feeling like drifting through a Chinese ink painting, and the comparison is not really an exaggeration.

Trips can be booked in segments, with the most popular stretch running between two of the historic stone bridges and lasting roughly an hour and a half, or longer routes that string together multiple sections for a half-day on the water. Wear clothes that can get splashed, bring sun protection in summer, and pack a dry bag for phones and cameras, since small splashes are inevitable at the weirs. Mornings usually offer the calmest water and the softest light.

The landscape the rafts drift through is part of the Guilin Karst, a component of the South China Karst UNESCO World Heritage serial property, and for many visitors a Yulong bamboo-raft trip is the single most memorable way to experience the towering limestone pinnacles that make Yangshuo one of the most famous scenic regions in China.
