クムタグ砂漠

The Kumtag Desert scenic area sits on the eastern edge of the Turpan Basin, directly adjoining the county town of Shanshan (Pichan) in Xinjiang. Its name translates from Uyghur as "Sand Mountain," and the park protects a section of one of China's shifting sand deserts, where tall dunes rise abruptly from the edge of the oasis settlement. The proximity of town and dune is unusual and is the main draw for visitors: a traveler can walk from the paved streets of Shanshan directly into a landscape of wind-carved ridges and hollows.

The dune field here is part of a larger desert that links the Turpan Basin with the Lop Nor region to the southeast. Within the scenic area, the highest ridges reach more than a hundred meters, and the sand, sculpted by prevailing winds into ripples, crescents, and long slip faces, shifts noticeably over weeks and seasons. Morning and late afternoon light bring out the warm tones of the sand and the long shadows of the crests, which is when most photographers visit.

Developed facilities at the entrance include changing areas, a small museum on desert geography, camel-riding stands, and dune buggies for hire. Boarded walkways lead out to the first ridge for those who want only a short stroll, while more active travelers climb higher for views back over Shanshan and the green belt of poplar trees that marks the irrigation channel feeding the town. The park is also the starting point for the overnight camping experience offered elsewhere in the Kumtag area.

For international visitors following a Silk Road itinerary, Kumtag offers the most accessible extended desert walk on the eastern Turpan circuit. It is usually paired with the nearby ruins of Gaochang and the Bezeklik Caves, or with the Flaming Mountains on a loop back to Turpan city. The best months are spring and autumn, when the sand surface is cool enough to walk on in comfort and the evening skies are clear.
