木涜古鎮

Mudu is a small water town on the western edge of Suzhou's urban area, lying between the old city and the slopes of Tianping Mountain at the foot of the Lake Tai highlands. Founded more than two and a half thousand years ago, the town is said to take its name from the timber that was floated down the local canals in the Spring and Autumn period to build the palaces of the Kingdom of Wu at nearby Tiger Hill. Today Mudu is best understood not as a single water town but as a sequence of classical Suzhou gardens strung along its historic Shantang Street, all within easy walking distance of each other.

The defining feature of Mudu is the concentration of late-imperial scholar-official estates that line its main canal. Four of these are open as a combined ticket and are the principal reason most visitors make the trip. Yan Family Garden is the most celebrated, a Ming-Qing estate rebuilt and expanded in the eighteenth century, known for its elegant pond-centered layout and the long calligraphic inscriptions of the Qianlong emperor, who is said to have stayed here on several of his southern inspection tours. Hongyin Mountain Villa preserves a small imperial audience hall and a stage where Pingtan and kunqu were once performed for the court.

The other two gardens, Gusu Song Garden with its ancient podocarpus trees, and the Number Two Scholar's Mansion, a restored Qing dynasty residence, round out the set. All four gardens line the same historic street, which runs along the Mudu canal for about a mile. The street itself preserves stretches of old canal-side housing, several arched stone bridges, and a working market atmosphere that is less curated than the restored pedestrian streets in central Suzhou.

Compared with Zhouzhuang or Tongli, Mudu receives fewer international visitors and has a more lived-in, working-town feel. It is the closest water-town experience to central Suzhou, reachable in under an hour from the old city, and the concentration of small classical gardens along a single canal makes for an easy half-day walk. For travelers who have already seen the headline gardens of central Suzhou and want to see how the same design vocabulary was applied on a smaller, more domestic scale in the surrounding canal towns, Mudu is the most accessible option in the region.
