クンジュラブ国門について
The Khunjerab National Gate marks the high-altitude border crossing between China and Pakistan on the Karakoram Highway, sitting at the top of the Khunjerab Pass in Tashkurgan County within the Kashgar prefecture. As the principal land route between China and Pakistan, and one of the highest international border crossings in the world, the gate has both functional and symbolic significance. For travellers who have driven the Karakoram Highway from Kashgar, reaching the gate is the climax of the journey and the literal end of the Chinese road.
The setting is genuinely dramatic. The pass sits above five thousand metres in altitude, surrounded by the ice peaks of the Pamir and the Karakoram, and the air is thin enough that physical exertion requires caution. The landscape is one of bare rock, permanent or near-permanent snow on the high ground, and the sparse alpine vegetation that manages to survive at this altitude and latitude. The sense of being at the meeting point of two great mountain systems, and at the junction of two countries linked by one of the most ambitious road-building projects of the twentieth century, is part of what draws visitors here.
The gate itself is a formal structure marking the boundary, and the surrounding border area has been developed as a national-level scenic precinct, with visitor facilities appropriate to a remote high-altitude destination. The modern crossing between the two countries, established as a formal port of entry in the mid-1980s, replaced earlier informal routes across the pass. The road and gate complex are the result of the long engineering project that built the Karakoram Highway, itself a major episode in the modern history of regional transport infrastructure.
For international visitors, the Khunjerab National Gate is best treated as the high point of a multi-day Karakoram Highway itinerary, generally not as a standalone day trip. Permits, transport, and acclimatisation all require advance planning. Bring cold-weather clothing and sun protection, and plan for the effects of altitude. The gate is generally accessible only during the warmer months, when the road is clear of snow. Allow the better part of a day for the final approach from Tashkurgan, with stops at the surrounding viewpoints and a brief visit to the gate itself.
