The Chengde Mountain Resort is the crowning imperial garden of Chengde and the largest surviving imperial garden in China, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that anchors any visit to this northern Hebei city. Begun in 1703 under the Kangxi Emperor and completed over the following 89 years through the reigns of Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong, it served as the Qing dynasty's second political center, a summer retreat where the court escaped the heat of Beijing and received foreign envoys and leaders of frontier peoples. The resort blends palace halls, lakes, paddies, and rolling parkland into a single vast composition. Beyond the lakes, the mountain zone rises through forests and temples, and the flatland area reproduces a fragment of the Mongolian steppe, a deliberate symbolic gesture toward the peoples the court met here. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather for rambling, while high summer is cooler than Beijing but can still be warm at midday. Most visitors combine the palace halls in the morning, when crowds are thinner, with the lakes and gardens later.
