避暑山荘について
The Chengde Mountain Resort is the crowning imperial garden of Chengde and the largest surviving imperial garden in China, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that anchors any visit to this northern Hebei city. Begun in 1703 under the Kangxi Emperor and completed over the following 89 years through the reigns of Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong, it served as the Qing dynasty's second political center, a summer retreat where the court escaped the heat of Beijing and received foreign envoys and leaders of frontier peoples. For a traveler trying to understand how the Qing governed a multiethnic empire, there is no more evocative place to start.
The resort blends palace halls, lakes, paddies, and rolling parkland into a single vast composition. The front palace area holds the formal halls where emperors held court and received guests, while the lake zone, with its islets, bridges, and pavilions, deliberately echoes the delicate garden scenery of southern China that Qianlong admired on his tours. Beyond the lakes, the mountain zone rises through forests and temples, and the flatland area reproduces a fragment of the Mongolian steppe, a deliberate symbolic gesture toward the peoples the court met here. Strolling from hall to lake to ridge, you move through a designed landscape meant to stand for the empire itself.
Give yourself the better part of a day to explore properly, as the grounds are enormous and walking the full circuit is genuinely tiring. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather for rambling, while high summer is cooler than Beijing but can still be warm at midday. Most visitors combine the palace halls in the morning, when crowds are thinner, with the lakes and gardens later. A site map helps orient you, as it is easy to underestimate distances inside the walls.
The Mountain Resort is the natural anchor of any Chengde itinerary, and the famous Outlying Temples, including Putuo Zongcheng and Puning, stand just to its north and are best understood as part of the same diplomatic-religious complex. Visiting the resort first gives essential context for the temples, so plan to start here even if you only have one full day in the city.
