Hu Qing Yu Tang Chinese Medicine Culture
National ICH · Batch 1Origin
Founded by Hu Xueyan in 1874 in Hangzhou's Qinghefang, Hu Qing Yu Tang saw its Chinese-medicine culture inscribed on the first national ICH list in 2006.
The art form
It inherited the techniques and rules of the Song official formulary Taiping Huimin Heji Jufang, preparing pills, powders, pastes and elixirs by old methods under the maxim of genuine ingredients and exacting craft.
Cultural significance
Hu Xueyan's "forbid deception" plaque made the house a symbol of integrity in Chinese medicine, paired with Beijing's Tongrentang as one of the two great pharmacies.
Where to experience
The tradition is carried on and displayed at Hu Qing Yu Tang and its Chinese-medicine museum in Hangzhou.
