The Huogongdian temple fair grew up around the fire-god worship at Changsha's Huogongdian and is said to have continued for several centuries, one of Hunan's most representative fairs, uniting worship, commerce and entertainment. It is listed among the folklore items on the national ICH register.

The art form

During the fair, opera, flower-drum theatre, storytelling, folk feats and handicraft displays gather in and around Huogongdian, alongside every kind of traditional Changsha snack, the bustle capturing the street-life folklore of old Changsha better than anywhere else.

Cultural significance

The Huogongdian temple fair carries Changsha's fire-god belief, urban folklore and food culture, an important window onto Hunan folk life and festival tradition.
