Tour Fu de Zhongyuan

Zhongyuan Tower, also known as the Henan Radio and Television Tower, is a 388-meter steel structure on the southeastern edge of Zhengzhou's central districts that functions as a broadcast facility, observation deck, and cultural attraction in one. As a 4A national scenic area and one of the ten provincial landmark buildings of Henan, it is one of the most recognizable features of the city's skyline and one of the most useful orientation points for first-time foreign visitors trying to map Zhengzhou in their heads.

The tower was designed by the Tongji University Architectural Design and Research Institute and received China's prestigious Tien-yow Jien Civil Engineering Prize. Its structure is among the largest all-steel towers in the world, with a flower-like upper crown set above a slender shaft and a three-legged base. The form deliberately evokes a blooming peony, the official flower of Henan, while also serving the demanding structural needs of a high-rise broadcast tower in a seismic zone.

The observation experience unfolds across multiple levels. An indoor observation deck sits enclosed behind floor-to-ceiling glass, while an open-air deck on a higher floor offers an unobstructed 360-degree view over the entire Zhengzhou metropolitan area. On clear days, the Yellow River is visible to the north, while the high-rise forest of the Zhengdong New District CBD fills the eastern foreground. Telescopes are mounted at intervals, and informational panels in Chinese and English identify major landmarks.

The lower levels of the tower host a rotating set of cultural exhibitions, including a panoramic painted scroll that depicts scenes from Henan history, and a small museum of broadcasting equipment that traces the province's media evolution. A 4D cinema in the lower pod runs short films through the day, and a revolving restaurant on one of the mid-level observation floors serves Cantonese and international cuisine with a slow circuit of the city skyline.

For independent travelers, the tower is best visited in the hour before sunset, when the view transitions from daytime clarity to the sparkling night skyline of modern Zhengzhou. Tickets can be bought on-site, though booking ahead saves time on weekends. Bring a light jacket, since the open-air deck can be windy even on calm ground-level days. Photography is permitted throughout, and a wide lens captures the tower's own architecture from below, while a telephoto pulls in the dense detail of the city's CBD skyline.
