Jianye Movie Town, located along Zhengzhou's Zhengkai Avenue, is an immersive film-themed cultural park that recreates early twentieth-century Henan street life as a living movie set. As a 4A national scenic area, it has quickly become one of the most photographed attractions in central China, drawing young Chinese visitors in particular for its high-production street scenes, live performances, and elaborate costume-photo opportunities. For foreign travelers, it offers an accessible, theatrical introduction to the cultural aesthetic of Republican-era China.

The town is built around several reconstructed streets that mirror old Zhengzhou and the wider Central Plains region in the 1920s and 1930s. Brick and timber facades line the lanes, advertising posters in period typography promote vintage brands, and staff in period costume, from rickshaw drivers to newspaper boys, walk the streets in character. Visitors can rent qipao dresses, long gowns, or scholar robes from on-site shops and pose against the period backdrops, a major part of the experience for the many young Chinese groups who plan full-day photo shoots here.

Live performance is woven through the entire day. The flagship stage show blends acrobatics, projection mapping, and choreographed fight scenes to dramatize scenes from classic Chinese cinema. Smaller acts punctuate the street life: marching brass bands, Peking opera excerpts, comedy skits, and immersive scenes that pull willing audience members into the action. In the evening, a parade with illuminated floats, fireworks, and dancer ensembles transforms the main street into a nighttime spectacle that keeps visitors on-site well past dark.

The food and shopping scene leans into the same period aesthetic. Themed restaurants serve regional Henan dishes such as braised noodles, spicy pepper soup, and steamed buns, alongside more crowd-pleasing snacks like candied hawthorn sticks and grilled skewers. Boutiques sell curated souvenirs, including film-related merchandise, retro postcards, and locally designed craft items. The adjoining Movie Town Hotel allows guests to extend the experience overnight, with rooms decorated in period style.

Independent visits work best with advance planning. The park is roughly an hour's drive from downtown Zhengzhou and is well connected by ride-hailing services. Tickets should be booked ahead for weekends and public holidays, when entry times can sell out. Wear comfortable shoes for extensive walking, and bring layers, since much of the experience is outdoors. A translation app helps with the live shows, where dialogue is usually in Mandarin, but the visual storytelling carries most of the meaning even without language support.
