Île de Donghai

Donghai Island is a large, flat landmass off the eastern coast of Zhanjiang, ranking among the biggest islands in Guangdong Province and connected to the city's main urban core by a long sea bridge. For foreign travelers, it offers a quieter coastal alternative to the downtown beaches, with working fishing villages, salt pans, long stretches of sand, and an emerging cluster of aquaculture farms that supply much of the region's premium seafood. It is one of the few places in the Zhanjiang area where rural South China coastal life is still within easy reach of the city.

The island covers a very large area, and its terrain is a low-lying patchwork of palm groves, sweet potato fields, and brackish fish ponds. Local residents live in scattered villages along its length, and while fishing remains culturally important, the local economy has shifted firmly toward aquaculture in recent decades. Prawns, groupers, oysters, and sea cucumbers are raised in ponds and cages that line the shore, and many of these products end up on plates in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and beyond.

The longest sand beach on Donghai runs along its eastern oceanfront, a largely undeveloped stretch where weekend crowds from Zhanjiang come to picnic, fly kites, and wade in the warm South China Sea water. The beach is backed by casuarina windbreaks rather than hotels, which keeps the mood rustic, though it also means limited facilities and no lifeguard service, so swimming is at your own risk. Sunset over the western mudflats, when oystermen walk back across the tidal flats with baskets, is a favorite scene for photographers.

Donghai Island is straightforward to reach. The bridge from downtown Zhanjiang accommodates private cars, taxis, and public buses, and the drive takes less than an hour depending on traffic. Independent travelers usually hire a driver for a half-day loop, stopping at the beach, the salt pans, and one of the village seafood kitchens. Bring sun protection, snacks, and drinking water, since shops are sparse outside the main settlements. The island is at its most photogenic in the golden hour before sunset, when the wide horizons and flat landscape take on a soft, almost Mediterranean quality.
