Chikan Old Street is the historic heart of Zhanjiang's Chikan district, a short but characterful pedestrian lane that locals still affectionately call French Avenue after its colonial-era past. Stretching only about four hundred meters, it may seem modest in scale, but it carries nearly a century of commercial history and remains one of the easiest places in the city for a foreign visitor to feel the texture of old Zhanjiang. Today the street is a lively pedestrian shopping arcade lined with restored qilou, or arcaded shophouses, whose ground-floor verandas provide shade from the Leizhou sun.

Zhanjiang's French connection dates to the late nineteenth century, when the area was leased to France as part of Kwangchou Wan, a territory that the colonial administration held until the mid-twentieth century. Vestiges of that period survive in the weathered European architectural details that sit alongside southern Chinese shopfronts, in the old wooden window frames, and in the occasional cast-iron balcony. Restoration work in recent years has stabilized the structures and added heritage interpretive panels, making the lane a self-guided walking museum of early modern South China.

The shopping scene today leans toward small independent boutiques rather than international chains. Vendors sell locally roasted coffee, dried seafood souvenirs, hand-pressed peanut oil, traditional Chinese pastries, and clothing in a mix of old and new styles. Food stalls dish out Zhanjiang specialties such as oyster omelets, rice noodle rolls, and herbal teas, and the lane is at its most atmospheric in the early evening, when lanterns switch on, locals spill out for after-dinner strolls, and the smell of grilled seafood drifts from side alleys.

Chikan Old Street pairs naturally with a visit to the nearby downtown commercial district and the broader Chikan waterfront. Most visitors spend about an hour, but photography fans will want longer to capture the layered facades, intricate window grilles, and street-life moments. Come on foot, since parking in the surrounding blocks is tight, and bring small cash for the older vendors who still prefer it. As a free, walkable, and centrally located attraction, the old street is an easy addition to any first-day orientation walk in Zhanjiang.
