À propos de Banque Rishengchang
Rishengchang Draft Bank is the historic counting house of China's first national-scale remittance bank, founded in 1823 on Pingyao's bustling West Street. Often described as the first bank in Chinese history, it pioneered the system of paper drafts that allowed silver to be moved safely across the vast distances of the Qing empire without physically transporting metal. Today the building houses the China Draft Bank Museum, and it is one of the key stops for understanding Pingyao's role as the financial capital of late imperial China.
The bank's network of branches once stretched across much of the country, from Beijing and Shanghai to the trading cities of Mongolia and Russia, and its paper drafts made possible the long-distance trade in tea, silk, and other goods that enriched the Shanxi merchants. The museum's exhibits trace the rise of this remarkable institution, explaining how the draft system worked, how the bank trained its clerks and guarded against fraud, and how the entire network was coordinated from this single Pingyao courtyard.
The building itself is a beautifully preserved late Qing commercial courtyard, with carved wooden screens, lantern-lit halls, and a strong sense of the disciplined, almost monastic world of the bank's employees. Exhibits include old account books, seals, drafts, and daily-use objects that bring the bank's operations to life, along with bilingual panels that explain the innovations in finance, security, and management that made Rishengchang so influential. The carefully restored chambers, with their hidden strongrooms and small sleeping quarters for the staff, give a vivid sense of how the bank actually functioned on a daily basis.
Rishengchang Draft Bank sits on West Street inside the Ancient City, a short walk from the central axis and the county government office, and it is included in the Pingyao combo ticket. Allow about an hour to walk through the courtyard and read the exhibits at a relaxed pace. The site is busiest in late morning and early afternoon, so an early visit offers a calmer experience. For any traveler curious about the history of Chinese finance, or simply trying to understand how a small walled city once ran the money supply of an empire, this museum is one of the most fascinating and rewarding stops in Pingyao.
