À propos de Remparts de l'ancienne cité de Pingyao
The Pingyao Ancient City Wall is the massive fortification that encloses the old city, running for about six kilometers in a rectangular loop studded with watchtowers and pierced by six great gates. First built in the early Ming dynasty in the fourteenth century and repeatedly reinforced since, it is one of the best-preserved city walls of any county seat in China. Walking its ramparts is one of the signature experiences of any visit to Pingyao.
The wall is built from rammed earth faced with brick, and its impressive thickness and height reflect its serious military purpose. Defensive towers stand at regular intervals along the parapet, and the corners are anchored by larger watchtowers that offer wide views over both the old city and the modern districts outside. The design follows a traditional local motif of a tortoise, complete with head, tail, and four legs, a long-standing Chinese symbol of longevity and stability, which gives the walled city its distinctive outline.
From the top of the wall you can read the whole layout of the Ancient City at a glance: the strict grid of streets, the sea of grey tiled roofs, the larger halls and temples rising above the residential lanes, and the watchtowers and courtyards of the old government offices. In the other direction, the contrast with the modern city beyond the walls is equally striking, making the walk a useful orientation for the rest of a visit. Sunrise and sunset are the most photogenic times, when the light rakes across the tiles and the wall itself glows warm orange.
Walking the entire perimeter takes roughly an hour and a half at an easy pace, and there are several staircases up and down so you can choose a shorter section if you prefer. Access to the wall is included with the city's combo ticket, and several gatehouses and towers along the route are worth a closer look. Comfortable shoes and water are worth bringing in warmer months, and winter visits can be cold and breezy up on the exposed parapet. For travelers to Pingyao, a walk along the wall is both a pleasure in its own right and the best way to appreciate the scale and coherence of this UNESCO-listed walled city.
