Calle n.º 8 de la Antorcha (Huoju Bajie)

Huoju Ba Jie, "Torch 8th Street," is a short residential street in the high-tech district of Weihai that, over the past several years, has become one of the most photographed locations on the eastern Shandong coast. Its popularity among younger Chinese travelers has turned a previously quiet road into a recognizable Weihai landmark and a useful stop for foreign visitors looking for a low-key urban experience.

The appeal of the street lies in its topography. Huoju Ba Jie runs downhill toward the sea, ending abruptly at a coastal promenade and a wide view of the bay. Seen from the upper end of the street, the road appears to slope directly into the water, with the horizon framed by the buildings on either side. The view, the cool-toned coastal light, and the small cluster of pastel-painted houses near the bottom have made the street a favorite subject for travel photography on Chinese social media.

The street itself has been quick to adapt. Small cafes, design-oriented souvenir shops, and a handful of boutique guesthouses now line the lower end, giving the area the feel of an emerging creative district rather than a typical residential block. The surrounding neighborhood, with its older apartment buildings and tree-lined streets, is itself part of the appeal, quiet, walkable, and clearly lived-in.

For a foreign traveler, Huoju Ba Jie is best visited as a relaxed morning or late-afternoon stop, ideally with a coffee and a slow walk down to the promenade. It is not a monument or a museum, and the experience is closer to people-watching than sightseeing. Pair it with the international bathing beach just to the north, the coastal ring-road sightseeing bus, and other recent additions to Weihai's growing roster of small-scale urban attractions for a slower-paced day in the city.
