Zoológico de fauna salvaje Shendiaoshan de Xixiakou

The Xixiakou Shendiaoshan Wildlife Park is a large open-range coastal wildlife park at the eastern tip of the Shandong peninsula near Rongcheng, part of the broader Xixiakou resort area outside Weihai. Set against a dramatic stretch of the Yellow Sea coast, it is one of the most ambitious animal parks in eastern China and a popular destination for domestic visitors touring the Jiaodong Peninsula.

The park is laid out as a single continuous route through habitat zones rather than as a grid of cages. Walking paths lead visitors through sections dedicated to large predators, grazing mammals, marine mammals, African species, bears, birds, primates, and giant pandas, with much of the enclosure design aimed at giving animals visible, semi-natural space. The coastal setting is integral to the experience: in several zones, the shoreline itself forms one boundary, and visitors walk above the rocks while watching sea lions and seals in the water below.

The species list is broad and includes many of the headline animals that Chinese families expect from a major wildlife park, including giant pandas, golden snub-nosed monkeys, Northeast China tigers, lions, giraffes, and a wide range of birdlife. The park also runs live demonstrations of predator and marine-mammal behavior, which are among its most heavily attended features.

For a foreign traveler, the park is a worthwhile day trip from Weihai or Rongcheng, particularly for visitors traveling with children. Plan a long half-day on foot, and arrive early in peak seasons to avoid the heaviest crowds. Animal welfare practices at Chinese wildlife parks can differ from those in Europe and North America, so travelers should set expectations accordingly. The coastal backdrop and the integration of marine mammal viewing into the route are what make the experience distinctive.
