Liugong Island is a small, historically loaded island guarding the mouth of Weihai Bay, reached by a short ferry ride from downtown Weihai. Designated a 5A national scenic area, it is best known to Chinese visitors as the headquarters and final anchorage of the Beiyang Fleet, the modern Qing dynasty navy destroyed in the first Sino-Japanese War of 1894 to 1895. For foreign travelers, it offers a rare combination of coastal scenery, late-Qing military history, and memorial architecture.

The island's historical identity dominates any visit. After the founding of the Beiyang Fleet in the late nineteenth century, Liugong became its principal base, equipped with naval academies, dry docks, fortifications, and officers' quarters. The island's role in the war with Japan, and the destruction of much of the fleet in Weihai Bay, is preserved across several museums, monuments, and restored military installations, including the naval academy buildings and the gun emplacements on Qiding Hill.

Beyond the military sites, the island protects a surprising stretch of natural landscape. The Liugong Island National Forest Park covers much of the interior, with mature tree cover, walking trails, and viewpoints over the Yellow Sea. A bilingual Expo Garden, a whale specimen hall, and several late-Qing-era Western-style buildings, leftovers from the British lease of Weihaiwei, round out the visitor experience.

For a self-guided traveler, Liugong Island deserves a full day, with an early ferry to maximize time on the island. Walking is the primary mode of getting around, so comfortable shoes are essential. The museums can be dense, and a translation app or guided tour significantly improves the experience for non-Chinese readers. Pair the visit with the ruins and memorials on the mainland for a deeper understanding of Weihai's late-Qing history.
