The Starlight Night Market, set across the central squares of Jinghong's Gaozhuang tourism district, has become in only a few years one of the most popular evening attractions in all of Xishuangbanna. As dusk falls, hundreds of pop-up stalls unfold beneath strings of warm lights, transforming the district into an open-air bazaar that blends Dai, Yi, Hani, Jinuo, and broader Southeast Asian traditions into a single walkable space. For many independent travelers it is the most memorable single experience of a Xishuangbanna trip, and unlike most sights it costs nothing to enter.

Food is the main draw. Stalls grill skewered meats, pineapple rice, bamboo-tube sticky rice, grilled fish wrapped in banana leaf, fried insects for the adventurous, tropical fruit shaved-ice, and bowls of fragrant Dai curry, all cooked in front of you and eaten standing or perched on small plastic stools. Drinks range from freshly squeezed passionfruit juice to rice wine and locally grown Pu-erh tea. Beyond food, the market sells Dai silver jewelry, hand-loomed textiles, lacquerware, carved teak, tropical-print clothing, embroidered bags, jade and amber beads, and an endless selection of souvenirs, with bargain-hunting expected as part of the fun.

Equally memorable is the pageant of people. Young travelers rent full Dai costume, peacock headdresses, and shimmering gold body paint for elaborate photo shoots against the lit stupas; street musicians and ethnic-dance troupes perform on small stages; and the crowd itself, drawn from across China and mainland Southeast Asia, is a large part of the spectacle. Peak-season evenings get very dense, so arrive on the early side if you want to browse calmly.
