Xishuangbanna Urwald-Park

Xishuangbanna Primeval Forest Park sits east of Jinghong on the north bank of the Lancang (Mekong) River, protecting a stretch of monsoon rainforest that has never been cleared for farming or rubber plantations. It is one of the easiest places near the prefectural capital to step into genuine primary tropical forest without committing to a full-day trek, and the park has been laid out around a fixed sightseeing-bus circuit with several timed stops rather than free-form hiking.

The single most photographed moment is at Peacock Villa. At scheduled times keepers release dozens, sometimes hundreds, of trained green peacocks, the iconic bird of Xishuangbanna, and they glide across the surface of a small lake to a feeding platform on the far shore. It is a brief but genuinely memorable sight. Further stops include an Aini (a branch of the Hani people) mountain-village reconstruction with traditional thatched stilt-houses, and an ethnic song-and-dance performance ground where visitors are invited to join a scaled-down water-splashing activity, a nod to the Songkran traditions at the heart of local Dai culture.

The forest itself is the park's quieter attraction. Boardwalks and short loops lead under a high canopy of dipterocarp trees, palms, and strangler figs, with vines thick enough to swing from, and a real chance of spotting macaques, hornbills, or the giant squirrels that live in the upper canopy. Reading up in advance helps, since on-trail signage is limited.

For travelers who want the rainforest experience but are short on time, or who are visiting Xishuangbanna with children, the Primeval Forest Park is a sensible half-day option close to Jinghong, pairing well with Manting Park or the Dai Minority Park on a single day's circuit.
