Xishuangbanna Dai-Ethnie-Park

The Xishuangbanna Dai Minority Park lies in Menghan town, southeast of Jinghong, and gathers five well-preserved Dai villages into a single visitable cultural area. The villages, known locally as Manjiang, Manchunman, Manting, Manzha, and Manga, are living communities rather than open-air museums, and Dai families still farm, weave, brew rice wine, and worship at village temples in the rhythms of everyday life. Walking between them along shaded lanes, visitors see the same vernacular architecture that defines Xishuangbanna: stilted bamboo houses with sloped thatch or tile roofs, and slender Burmese-style stupas gleaming white above the tree line.

The signature experience inside the park is the daily water-splashing performance, a joyful, scaled-down version of the Songkran celebrations that draw crowds from across the prefecture every April. Villagers and visitors gather in a central square around a gilded stupa and splash water from bowls and basins, in the Dai tradition of blessing and good fortune for the new year. Around it, you can watch Dai weaving and paper-making demonstrations, sample sticky rice steamed in bamboo tubes and grilled fish wrapped in banana leaf, and buy silver jewelry, hand-woven textiles, and lacquerware directly from the makers.

The Buddhist temples here are smaller and more intimate than the great monasteries of Jinghong but no less characterful. Manchunman Temple in particular, with its golden spire and faded murals of the Buddha's life, is a quiet place to sit and observe Theravada practice, the southern school of Buddhism that has shaped Dai culture for centuries.

For travelers who want to understand how Dai people actually live rather than simply look at staged performances, the Dai Minority Park is one of the most rewarding stops in Xishuangbanna, and it pairs well with a half-day at Manting Park or a longer rainforest hike the following day.
