Mausoleum von Yu dem Großen (Dayu-Mausoleum)

The Great Yu Mausoleum, located at the foot of Kuaiji Mountain southeast of central Shaoxing, is a 4A-rated cultural and religious site traditionally identified as the burial place of Yu the Great, the legendary founder of the Xia dynasty and one of the most venerated figures in early Chinese historical mythology. As the centerpiece of the larger Kuaiji Mountain scenic area, the mausoleum complex has been a site of imperial pilgrimage and popular devotion for more than two thousand years.

The site encompasses three principal components: the mausoleum itself, the Yu Temple, and the Yu Shrine. The mausoleum is marked by a large ritual mound approached via a sequence of ceremonial gates and memorial steles, including inscriptions by emperors and prominent literati of successive dynasties. The Yu Temple, the principal devotional structure on the site, contains a seated statue of Yu the Great and a series of halls dedicated to associated figures and episodes from the Yu legend. The Yu Shrine, located nearby, served historically as the principal site of the imperial sacrifices to Yu, which were conducted at regular intervals from the Han dynasty onward.

The cultural significance of the Great Yu Mausoleum rests on the central place of Yu the Great in Chinese origin mythology. According to tradition, Yu spent years directing the taming of the great flood that devastated early China, famously passing his own door three times without entering during the years of his labor, and was rewarded with the founding of the Xia dynasty as the first hereditary state in Chinese history. Whether or not the tradition reflects a historical individual, the figure of Yu and the site at Kuaiji Mountain have been central to Chinese state ritual and to popular religious practice across multiple dynasties.

The surrounding Kuaiji Mountain area includes several other attractions, including the One Hundred Birds Garden, the still-active Xianglu Peak temple complex, and the wooded ridgelines of the broader scenic area. For international visitors, the mausoleum is typically visited as a focused half-day trip from central Shaoxing, often combined with the Orchid Pavilion or the Kuaiji Mountain Doulv Tian Scenic Area as part of a wider circuit through the historical and religious landscape southeast of the old city.
