Dong-See

East Lake is a small but distinctive scenic lake roughly six kilometers east of the historic core of Shaoxing, renowned for its unusual combination of sheer quarry cliffs, calm green water, and intimate scale. Long described as a "shanshui bonsai," or landscape bonsai, the site is the smallest of Shaoxing's major classical landscapes but is also one of its most photographed, with vertical rock faces rising directly out of the water and a single winding path connecting the principal viewpoints.

The lake's distinctive character is the result of centuries of quarrying. Beginning in the Han dynasty and continuing through the Qing, stonemasons cut into the hillsides here to extract building material, leaving behind deep vertical shafts that were later flooded to form the present lake. The remaining cliffs, some rising more than fifty meters above the water, are marked with the regular chisel patterns of the original extraction and are pierced by caves and tunnels that can be explored on foot or by boat. Wupeng boat rides on the lake take visitors into the lower caves, where the echoes of the boatman's sculling and the reflections on the water create one of the signature experiences of a visit.

Beyond the geological interest, East Lake has a place in modern Chinese popular culture as the filming location for the "Kingdom of Women" episode of the 1982 television adaptation of "Journey to the West," and the site is still frequented by viewers who recognize its cliffs and caves from the show. The surrounding gardens, with pavilions, willow-lined paths, and tea houses, were laid out during the late Qing dynasty to frame the lake, and they preserve the small-scale, garden-like atmosphere that distinguishes East Lake from Shaoxing's larger natural attractions.

For international visitors, East Lake is typically visited as a half-day trip from the old city, often in combination with the Orchid Pavilion to the southwest or the canal neighborhoods of the eastern suburbs. The compact layout and easy walking paths make it particularly suitable for visitors who want a less strenuous outdoor experience than the hills around Shaoxing offer, while the boat ride into the cliffs remains one of the most memorable single experiences in the region.
