The Xinchang Giant Buddha Temple Scenic Area is a 4A-rated Buddhist religious site on the southern slope of Nanming Mountain, immediately adjacent to the county town of Xinchang in the hills southwest of Shaoxing. Rather than a single temple compound, the site is a developed religious landscape of more than a dozen points of interest spread across the forested mountainside, with the Giant Buddha Hall as its spiritual and architectural focal point.

The centerpiece of the site is the Maitreya statue, carved directly into the cliff face over the course of the Southern and Northern dynasties period, with later additions and protective structures added through the Tang, Song, and subsequent dynasties. The statue is housed within the five-story Giant Buddha Hall, a wooden and stone structure that encloses the carving and provides a sequence of devotional spaces from the entrance courtyard to the upper viewing galleries. Around this central complex, the wider scenic area extends to include the Twin Groves Cliffside Caves, the Wood-Fossil and Dinosaur Park, and a series of smaller temples, pagodas, and pavilions linked by paved mountain paths.

The religious and historical significance of the site derives in part from its location along the ancient Buddhist transmission route between the Lower Yangtze plain and the inland Zhejiang-Fujian corridor. Xinchang's Giant Buddha is one of the largest early Chinese stone carvings of Maitreya in southern China, and the temple complex has been a continuous center of monastic activity, scholarship, and pilgrimage for more than fifteen hundred years. The cliff inscriptions, stele records, and architectural layers visible across the site document the changing styles of Buddhist art and architecture in southern China across multiple dynasties.

For international visitors, the Xinchang Giant Buddha Temple is typically visited as a full-day trip from central Shaoxing or as part of a wider exploration of the Xinchang area, which also includes the Nineteen Peaks Danxia landform and the associated wuxia-filming landscapes. The temple's proximity to the Xinchang county town makes it an easy addition to an itinerary that combines religious architecture with the natural scenery of the surrounding hills, and most visitors budget between half a day and a full day for a thorough visit.
