Leidongping (Emei-Berg)

Leidongping is the upper-mountain staging area on Mount Emei, the highland clearing where the road from the foothills meets the start of the final ascent to the Golden Summit. For most visitors to this UNESCO World Heritage mountain, Leidongping is the practical hinge of the day, the point where bus transport ends and the short walk to the Golden Summit cableway begins.

The altitude at Leidongping is already well into the montane zone, and the environment feels noticeably different from the subtropical foothills below. Dense conifer forest closes in around the clearing, mists roll across the paths without warning, and the temperature is far lower than at the base of the mountain. Warm clothing is essential here even on summer days, and many travelers who set out from Leshan in light clothing arrive at Leidongpid grateful for a rented coat. The clearing takes its name, Thunder Cave Flat, from the local lore that associates the upper slopes with sudden storms and the presence of dragons in the deep gullies of the ridge.

From Leidongping a short but steep path leads to the lower station of the cableway, and the walk itself is one of the more atmospheric sections of the Emei route. The path climbs through mature forest, crosses small streams, and passes places where the resident Tibetan macaques congregate. The monkeys of the upper mountain are bold and well accustomed to visitors, and travelers are advised to keep food packed away and to give the animals a respectful distance.

Because Leidongping sits at the junction of road, trail, and cableway, it can grow crowded during peak hours, and queues for the cableway often form here. Building in a little flexibility around timing makes the difference between a relaxed summit visit and a rushed one. For most travelers, though, Leidongping is simply the gateway to the high Emei that everyone passes through.
