Leshan Großer Buddha

The Leshan Giant Buddha is the largest stone-carved Buddha statue in the world and the defining landmark of Leshan city. Carved directly into a cliff face at the confluence of three rivers, the Min, Qingyi, and Dadu, the colossal Maitreya figure was inscribed together with Mount Emei as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The statue depicts a seated Buddha so vast that dozens of visitors can stand along its instep, and its serene expression gazes out over the rushing waters that have drawn travelers and pilgrims for centuries.

The project was begun in the eighth century by the monk Haitong, who according to tradition sought to calm the treacherous currents that endangered shipping at this river junction. By carving the cliff and redirecting the excavated stone into the riverbed, the effort is said to have eased the channel for boats. Work continued across generations before the figure was completed, reflecting both the scale of the ambition and the difficulty of working high on a vertical rock face in the Sichuan humidity.

Visitors today can view the Buddha from several angles. The most popular approach is the walk down the winding cliffside stairway, which descends beside the figure and allows close inspection of the carved folds of the robe and the drainage system engineered into the sculpture to reduce weathering. An alternative is the river cruise, which pulls back far enough from the shore to reveal the entire statue in silhouette against the green cliff, together with the surrounding temples of the Lingyun range. Many travelers combine both perspectives in a single visit.

Beyond the statue itself, the Lingyun Temple complex above the Buddha offers quieter halls, inscribed steles, and viewpoints over the three rivers. The site sits just east of downtown Leshan and is easily reached on a day trip from Chengdu or as part of a combined Emei and Leshan itinerary. For first-time visitors to the region, the Giant Buddha is the single most memorable stop.
