Dadu-Fluss Jinkou Große Schlucht Landschaftsgebiet

The Jinkou Grand Canyon of the Dadu River is one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Leshan region and a striking example of the deep river gorges that dissect the transition zone between the Sichuan Basin and the Tibetan plateau. The canyon cuts across the borders of Leshan's Jinkouhe district, Ya'an's Hanyuan county, and Liangshan's Ganluo county, carving a narrow cleft through the mountains where the Dadu River forces its way toward the basin.

The scale of the canyon is what impresses most. The gorge runs for many kilometers, its width at the rim in places barely a couple of hundred meters, while the walls drop more than two thousand meters to the river below. The resulting verticality produces a landscape of sheer cliffs, hanging waterfalls, and truncated spurs that compares with the better-known gorges of southwestern China but receives only a fraction of the visitors. The light changes constantly through the day as the sun angles into the cleft, and the geology of the strata is laid bare on the rock faces.

The Dadu River itself has long been a corridor of history as well as nature, and the canyon reaches follow a waterway that has carried armies, traders, and revolutionary routes through the mountains. Within the scenic area, viewpoints and short walking paths allow visitors to take in the gorge from several angles, and the drive in along the river road is itself part of the experience, threading between cliff and water.

Because the canyon is less developed than the headline attractions around Leshan, it appeals most to travelers who enjoy raw scenery and are willing to travel a little further for it. A visit combines well with the wider Jinkouhe area and offers a powerful reminder that, beyond the Buddhist heritage of Emei and the Giant Buddha, the Leshan region also contains some of the most rugged river landscape in southwestern China.
