Baoguo-Tempel

Baoguo Temple stands at the foot of Mount Emei and serves as the traditional gateway to this UNESCO World Heritage mountain, marking the point at which travelers leave the plain behind and enter the sacred landscape of the Buddhist peaks. Founded during the Ming dynasty, it is the first major monastery encountered on the standard pilgrimage route and the natural starting point for almost every visit to Emei.

The temple's name plaque is associated with the Kangxi emperor of the Qing dynasty, a link that reflects the long imperial patronage enjoyed by the Emei monasteries. Within the compound, the halls are arranged along a quiet axial sequence that introduces the devotional program of the mountain, with shrines to the principal Buddhas and bodhisattvas that the pilgrim will encounter again, at higher altitude, on the long climb toward the Golden Summit. Baoguo also functions as the center of Buddhist ritual activity on the lower mountain, and on festival days the temple fills with chanting, incense, and visiting monastics.

For modern travelers, Baoguo is where a Mount Emei visit practically begins. The surrounding area holds the main visitor facilities, trailheads, and transport links, and most itineraries, whether a single-day summit dash or a multi-day hike, are planned from here. The temple grounds are shaded by ancient trees, and even during the high season the interior courtyards retain an atmosphere of retreat from the busy entrance zone outside.

Many visitors who rush past Baoguo on their way up the mountain later regret not pausing longer, because the temple is one of the most harmonious ensembles on Emei and sets the religious tone for everything above. A short visit at the start or end of the day, when the halls are quieter, gives the best sense of the temple as a living monastery rather than a formal gateway to be checked off, and it rounds out any Mount Emei itinerary that is otherwise focused on the summit.
