Über Lanshan-Park

Lanshan Park is a large urban park on the summit of Gaolan Mountain, the natural barrier that rises to the south of central Lanzhou and the highest point within the immediate urban area. Developed as Lanzhou's first deliberately created forest park on the high ridge, Lanshan provides both a green recreational space and an elevated viewpoint from which the entire city can be seen. For international visitors, it offers one of the most rewarding perspectives on the urban geography of Lanzhou.

The park is organised around the highest section of the ridge, at an altitude of roughly five hundred metres above the surrounding city. The layout takes advantage of the natural topography, with terraces, pavilions, and walkways arranged along the ridgeline. The architecture, in a Chinese classical style with red columns and green-tiled roofs, has been carefully placed to provide a sequence of framed views across the city and the river valley. The planting, mature after decades of deliberate afforestation, has transformed the originally bare slope into a wooded environment that supports the recreational function of the park.

The climate and setting of Lanshan Park make it particularly popular during the hotter months, when the elevation gives the ridge a measurably cooler temperature than the city below. The park has long functioned as the principal summer retreat within the urban area of Lanzhou, and on warm evenings the pavilions and walkways fill with residents walking, picnicking, and enjoying the cooler air. The viewpoint at the top, looking out across the Lanzhou basin, is one of the most complete single overviews of the city available anywhere.

For international visitors, Lanshan Park is best treated as a half-day activity, ideally timed for the late afternoon and evening, when the temperature is most comfortable and the city below is seen in the warm light of the setting sun. Allow two to three hours for a relaxed visit, longer if you plan to take a meal in one of the park's pavilions. The park is accessible both by road and by a cable car that climbs the southern slope, and the cable car ride itself is one of the most distinctive experiences available in Lanzhou, with continuous views opening up as the car ascends.
