Hekou-Altstadt

Hekou Ancient Town is a historic settlement on the Yellow River west of Lanzhou, at a point where the river has long been navigable and where the town historically served as a port for the regional transport network of the upper Yellow River. Once an important node on what was known locally as the "golden waterway", Hekou received and dispatched goods travelling between the surrounding regions and the wider river system, and the town's historic fabric reflects that earlier role as a working river port. For international visitors, it is one of the most rewarding small-town excursions from Lanzhou.

The physical fabric of the town combines surviving older elements with more recent rebuilding and renovation. The streetscapes include a mix of older brick and timber structures, partial ruins of earlier periods, and newer buildings in a traditional style, including a recently reconstructed drum-and-bell tower at the town's central crossroads. The visual character of the town reflects the layered history of a settlement that has been built, abandoned, and rebuilt many times in response to the changing patterns of trade, transport, and settlement along the river.

The town's modern identity has been shaped by a sustained programme of heritage recognition and conservation. In recent years, Hekou has been designated as a provincial-level historic and cultural village, and a comprehensive plan has been developed to guide the restoration and protection of the historic fabric. The plan addresses the six key activities of rebuilding, protection, reorganisation, preservation, maintenance, and repair, with the aim of recovering the historic monuments and the broader character of the old town while sustaining its continuing life as a community.

For international visitors, Hekou Ancient Town is best treated as a day trip from Lanzhou, offering a quieter, more historically textured counterpart to the city's modern attractions. Allow a half-day to a full day for the visit, including a slow walk through the principal streets and a meal in one of the local restaurants. The town is accessible by road from central Lanzhou and is most easily visited by private vehicle or by regional transport. The most rewarding times to visit are spring and autumn, when the climate of the river valley is at its most comfortable and the light on the old brick and timber façades is at its most photogenic.
