Hu Family Historic Residence

The Hu Family Ancient Residence is a Ming dynasty official's compound on Minzhu West Road in the Qin Zhou district of Tianshui, popularly known as the "South and North Mansions." As a nationally protected cultural heritage site, it is one of the finest surviving Ming-era courtyard residences in Northwest China and one of the few extant Ming official residences in the entire western provinces.

Built roughly four centuries ago, the residence consists of two complementary compounds, the South Mansion and the North Mansion, separated by a narrow lane but conceived as a single household. Together they show how a senior Ming-era regional official and his extended family organized domestic space, ritual life, and administrative work within a single walled estate in the Tianshui basin.

The architecture combines the formal vocabulary of Ming official housing with the local timber and masonry traditions of southern Gansu. Deep-eaved halls face onto stone-paved courtyards; wooden lattice screens and carved brackets survive in several of the principal rooms; and the axial layout reinforces hierarchy between reception halls, family quarters, and ancestral spaces. Brackets, tiles, and door frames have been stabilized and partially restored, but much of the original fabric remains in place.

For foreign visitors, the residence offers a tangible counterpart to the more monumental sites around Tianshui. Pair it with the Fuxi Temple, which lies a short walk away, and the Tianshui Museum, which manages the compound and provides historical context. Allow an unhurried ninety minutes to explore both mansions and the side galleries, which are devoted to Ming furniture, calligraphy, and the history of the Hu family itself.
