Nanchang Ocean Park

Nanchang Ocean Park is one of the city's older large-scale aquarium attractions, predating the newer Sunac Ocean World and occupying a purpose-built indoor complex that has been expanded and refreshed several times since it first opened. The park is organized around six themed venues — a penguin habitat, a freshwater gallery, a walk-through tunnel tank, a coral reef hall, a reptile and amphibian house, and a jellyfish gallery — each focused on a distinct group of aquatic or semi-aquatic animals, giving the indoor route enough variety to hold the attention of younger visitors across a full circuit.

The penguin area is among the most popular sections, designed to reproduce an Antarctic environment where the birds can be observed both above and below the water through large viewing windows. Elsewhere, the tunnel tank carries visitors beneath a large aquarium where larger species swim overhead, while the reef and jellyfish galleries emphasize color, movement, and the visual drama of marine life. Scheduled live shows — including sea-lion performances and underwater costumed diver presentations — run at intervals through the day and are a major part of the park's family appeal, particularly during weekends and school holidays.

For foreign visitors, Nanchang Ocean Park is a straightforward, family-oriented attraction rather than a cultural site, and it is best suited to travelers with children who want an indoor activity or to visitors with a specific interest in aquariums. It does not rank among Nanchang's signature sights, but it is a reliable option on hot summer afternoons or rainy days when the city's outdoor attractions — Tengwang Pavilion, the riverside, the archaeological park — are less appealing. A visit typically fills two or three hours. Travelers choosing between this park and the newer Sunac Ocean World should consider that the two overlap considerably in content, so there is little reason to visit both unless aquariums are a particular interest, and the Sunac complex offers the advantage of pairing with a larger amusement and shopping district.
