About Shengjin Pagoda (Nanchang)

Shengjin Pagoda is a slender multi-story brick tower standing in the older southern quarter of Nanchang, and it is one of the city's most recognizable surviving traditional structures. The pagoda was first built during the Tianyou reign of the late Tang dynasty and was later rebuilt under the Kangxi emperor of the Qing, with later restorations bringing it to its present form. It rises roughly fifty-eight meters in an octagonal plan across seven tapering stories, each level ringed with upturned eaves and an encircling balcony, so that the silhouette reads as a stack of diminishing pavilions rather than a single solid shaft.

The pagoda's unusual name — literally "rope-gold pagoda" — comes from a legend recorded in local tradition that when the foundations were first dug, an iron casket was discovered containing four loops of gold rope, three ancient swords, and three hundred relic beads, and these objects were taken as an auspicious sign for the structure that rose above them. Whatever the historical basis of the story, the association has made the pagoda a long-standing landmark and a focal point for the surrounding old neighborhood, which has been redeveloped in recent years into a pedestrian-friendly district of traditional-style shopfronts, food stalls, and small teahouses clustered around the tower's base.

For foreign visitors, Shengjin Pagoda is best treated as a compact, atmospheric stop rather than a major standalone attraction. The tower itself is photogenic, the climb up the internal stairway to the upper galleries offers views across the surrounding rooftops, and the redeveloped neighborhood at its foot is one of the more pleasant corners of old Nanchang for an unhurried walk, a cup of tea, or a street-food snack. A visit typically takes an hour or two and pairs naturally with other central-Nanchang sights, particularly for travelers interested in traditional architecture and the texture of the older neighborhoods that survived the city's twentieth-century reconstruction. Evenings, when the pagoda is illuminated and the surrounding lanes come alive, are often the most rewarding time to come.

Cultural heritage

Shengjin Pagoda was first built in the Tianyou era of the Tang; legend says an iron casket was dug up while laying its foundations, holding four loops of golden cord, three ancient swords and three hundred relics, giving the pagoda its name of "Golden Cord," and it is one of the oldest surviving structures in the city. The historical quarter around it is one of Nanchang's three great old districts, covering some 176 mu and aiming to be a "Jiangxi ICH food street," uniting the thousand-year pagoda, Nanchang snacks, century-old shops and folk crafts.

Visiting: As the lanterns come on, the scent of jar soup, the sweetness of sugar-coated rice cake and the calls of snack sellers weave together the everyday warmth of old Nanchang; the pagoda bells, ICH craft shops and food stalls stand one after another, the best spot in the city to taste the classic Gan pairing of jar soup with sugar-coated rice cake.
