About Zhang's Garden
Zhang Family Garden (Zhangjia Huayuan) is a large, carefully restored Bai-style courtyard complex just north of Dali Old Town, near the Guanyintong (Guanyin Pond) area. As a showcase of traditional Bai residential architecture and garden design, it offers visitors one of the most accessible and detailed introductions to the aesthetics and craftsmanship that distinguish Bai homes in the Erhai basin. For travelers interested in local culture rather than only scenery, it fills a niche that the better-known Three Pagodas and Cangshan sites cannot.
The garden extends the classic Bai "san fang yi zhaobi" — three wings around a screen wall — layout into a more elaborate sequence of interconnected courtyards, each with carved gateways, painted beams, screen walls, and carefully composed plantings. The architecture reflects the defining features of Bai houses: blue tile roofs with upturned eaves, white-plastered walls decorated with painting and calligraphy, intricately carved wooden brackets and screens, and a deliberate orientation that embraces the Cangshan peaks and the Erhai light.
Beyond the architecture itself, Zhang Family Garden presents a curated set of cultural experiences. Visitors can watch traditional Bai singing and dance performances, observe indigo-dyeing and tie-dye demonstrations, sample local tea and Bai-style snacks, and learn about the customs of the Bai people, who have made this region home for well over a millennium. The programming makes the garden more of a living cultural center than a static museum.
For most travelers, a visit of one to two hours is sufficient, and pairs naturally with a trip to the Three Pagodas or a cycling excursion along the Erhai shore. Mornings tend to be quieter and offer better light for photography of the carved woodwork and courtyard gardens. English signage is limited, so a guide or advance reading enhances the visit for foreign guests.
