Mount Jizu

Mount Jizu (Jizushan) is a sacred Buddhist peak in Binchuan County, about two hours' drive east of Dali, named for its supposed resemblance to a chicken's foot. Long regarded as one of the most important Buddhist sites in southwest China, it is traditionally identified as the place where Mahakasyapa, one of the Buddha's principal disciples, retired to await the future Maitreya Buddha. For devout Buddhists across China and Southeast Asia, a pilgrimage to Jizushan is a once-in-a-lifetime act of devotion; for general travelers, it offers one of the most rewarding mountain landscapes in the Dali region.

The mountain's religious history spans more than a millennium, with its peak development during the Ming and Qing dynasties when dozens of temples dotted the slopes. Today, many of these temples have been restored, and the mountain remains an active pilgrimage site, especially during the lunar new year and on major Buddhist festivals. The trail up passes through a sequence of forested ridges, restored halls, and devotional pavilions, with small hermitages and shrines tucked into the folds of the slope.

The summit itself, at roughly 3,240 meters, rewards the climb with a 360-degree panorama that is among the finest in Yunnan. On a clear day, the view takes in the Cangshan range and Erhai Lake to the west, the red-earth highlands to the east, and the successive ranges of the Hengduan mountains to the north. Sunrise from the summit is the most coveted experience, with the famous "three sights" — sun, sea of cloud, and snow peaks — sometimes visible together.

Most visitors ride a cable car part of the way up and then climb the final stretch to the summit. The mountain is best visited as a full day trip from Dali, and is far less crowded than the better-known sites around Erhai. Bring layers for the altitude, comfortable shoes for the summit trail, and consider an overnight stay at one of the mountain guesthouses if you want to catch the sunrise without a predawn hike.
