Cangshan Mountain

Cangshan Mountain rises immediately west of Dali Old Town, a serrated twenty-kilometer ridge of nineteen peaks and eighteen streams that forms the dramatic backdrop to every classic view of the Erhai Lake basin. Its summit snows — "Cangshan snow" — are one of the "Four Famous Scenes of Dali," alongside the wind of Xiaguan, the flowers of Shangguan, and the moon over Erhai. For visitors, the mountain offers a complete contrast to the gentle lakeside below: alpine meadows, dense forests, waterfalls, and high ridges that, on a clear day, deliver one of the finest panoramas in southwest China.

The peaks reach well above four thousand meters, with the highest, Zhonghe, towering over the lake and old town. The mountain's mood is famously changeable — clouds pile up against the ridgeline in shifting shapes with names like "Looking-for-Husband Cloud" and "Jade Belt Cloud," and sudden fog or rain is common even when the lowland basks in sunshine. This unpredictable weather, and the striking contrast between snow-capped peaks and the subtropical basin below, is a defining quality of the Dali landscape.

Several routes lead up the mountain. The most popular are the two main cable cars — the Ximatan Ropeway to the summit area and the Gantong Ropeway to the mid-mountain zone — both of which connect to the Jade Belt Cloud Road, a scenic walking trail that traces the slopes halfway up. This trail, roughly flat and carved into the cliff side, gives access to waterfalls, Buddhist grottoes, mountain streams, and outlooks over Erhai that have been celebrated in Chinese poetry for over a thousand years.

For travelers, Cangshan rewards a slow approach. A half-day on the Gantong line, with a walk along the Jade Belt Road, suits most visitors; the Ximatan line, reaching over four thousand meters, is more ambitious and best for those with time, good footwear, and tolerance for altitude. Bring layers for the temperature swing between the summit and the old town, and try to time the visit for a clear morning, when the light on Erhai below is at its most photogenic.
