Erhai Lake

Erhai Lake is the vast alpine lake that defines the geography, climate, and romance of Dali. Stretching some forty kilometers from north to south and averaging nearly ten kilometers across, it sits at the foot of the Cangshan range, the two together forming the classic Dali panorama — blue water, green slopes, white-capped peaks — that has drawn travelers, painters, and poets to this corner of Yunnan for well over a thousand years. Its name, "Ear Sea," comes from its distinctive shape on the map.

The lake is one of the "Four Famous Scenes of Dali" and the focal point of almost every modern itinerary in the region. Along its shore lie the old town, the fishing villages of Caicun and Longkan, the artistic enclave of Shuanglang on the northeast bank, the historic Bai town of Xizhou to the north, and dozens of smaller settlements whose temples, markets, and guesthouses face the water. The recently completed Erhai Ecological Corridor, a hundred-kilometer-plus greenway that rings the shore, has opened much of the previously inaccessible lakefront to cyclists and pedestrians.

Beyond scenery, Erhai is woven into Bai culture and daily life. Traditional cormorant fishing, once the mainstay of lakeside villages, survives in performances and demonstrations; lakeside three-course tea ceremonies honor the Bai custom of "one bitter, one sweet, one aftertaste" tea service; and small temples, piers, and fishing shrines dot the shore. The lake is also a Ramsar-listed wetland, and each winter hosts large flocks of migratory birds, including black-headed gulls that have become a beloved seasonal symbol of Dali.

Most travelers experience Erhai by combining a cruise, a cycling day on the corridor, and time in one or two villages such as Shuanglang or Xizhou. The full lake loop is a popular one- or two-day e-bike or car circuit, while shorter sunset cruises from Longkan or Caicun piers offer the most atmospheric, low-effort experience. Sunrises over the lake with the Cangshan snow catching the first light are unforgettable.
