Beijing Zoo

Beijing Zoo is one of China's largest and oldest city zoos, set just outside the Xizhimen area in the western part of central Beijing. With a history stretching back more than a century to the late Qing dynasty, it holds a special place in the city and is home to an exceptionally wide range of animals. For families traveling with children, or anyone wanting a relaxed half-day among greenery and wildlife, it is a friendly and easygoing stop on a Beijing itinerary.

The zoo is spread across eastern, southern, and northern sections, with animal houses and enclosures set among ponds, trees, and old-fashioned pavilions. Its most famous residents are the giant pandas, and the panda house is the highlight for most visitors, drawing crowds eager to see China's beloved national animal up close. Beyond the pandas you will find big cats, elephants, primates, bears, and a large variety of birds and other species, along with historic early-twentieth-century structures that give parts of the grounds a distinctive character.

The grounds are extensive, so wear comfortable shoes and plan to do a fair bit of walking; most visitors spend two to three hours, or longer with young children. Mornings tend to be the best time to see the animals active and to reach the panda house before the biggest crowds. Weekends and holidays are busy, especially around the pandas, so an early start pays off. Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant weather for strolling the leafy paths.

Conveniently located and easy to reach in the city, Beijing Zoo pairs well with other nearby attractions and makes a nice change of pace from temples and palaces, particularly for travelers with kids. The neighboring aquarium is a popular add-on for families. Facilities include snack stands and rest areas, though bringing your own water and picnic supplies can be handy on a long visit. Modestly priced and centrally located, Beijing Zoo offers an enjoyable, low-key day out and a chance to see giant pandas without leaving the city.
