Taiyuan gong-and-drum originated in the folk ritual and festival activities of ancient Jinyang (Taiyuan), evolving over a millennium into a square percussion ensemble centered on the bass drum with gongs and cymbals in support—one of Taiyuan's most imposing folk music traditions.
