Taiyuan Gong-and-Drum

Taiyuan gong-and-drum originated in the folk ritual and festival activities of ancient Jinyang (Taiyuan), evolving over a millennium into a square percussion ensemble centered on the bass drum with gongs and cymbals in support—one of Taiyuan's most imposing folk music traditions.

Performances involve troupes of dozens arranged across a square; rhythms build from slow to fast and sparse to dense through elaborate patterns at high volume, creating a festive atmosphere used at welcoming ceremonies, celebrations and street parade processions.

A Shanxi provincial intangible heritage, Taiyuan gong-and-drum carries the ceremonial memory of ancient Jinyang, serving as an important cultural vehicle for community bonding and festival celebration.

Heard at various civic celebrations, cultural square events and Spring Festival social-fire processions in Taiyuan—one of the city's most recognizable folk soundscapes.
