The Mengle Cultural Tourism Zone, popularly known as the Mengle Grand Buddha Temple, stands on a forested hillside in Jinghong on the site of the old Jingpiao Temple, a royal monastery of the historical Dai court that fell into ruin and was rebuilt in the early 2000s. It is now the largest Theravada Buddhist complex in Xishuangbanna, and its golden spires and white stupa are visible across the prefectural capital from many parts of the city.

The complex climbs the hill in a sequence of terraced courtyards linked by more than three thousand stone steps. Most visitors ride the electric sightseeing cart up and then walk down, but fit travelers who climb the full staircase are rewarded with quiet side shrines, file of warrior and deva statues, and a real sense of pilgrimage. The main halls house monumental gilded Buddhas, and the wall reliefs retell the life of the Buddha and key Jataka stories in a southern, Sinicized Theravada style that fuses Dai, Burmese, and Tai decorative elements. The view from the summit, over Jinghong's rooftops to the green Lancang valley, is one of the best in the city.

Time a visit for the daily spectacle in which a youth dressed as a peacock (the sacred bird of the Dai) glides down a long zipline from the upper stupa to a lower lotus platform, a theatrical flourish that has become the temple's signature event. Equally worthwhile is the short water-splathing performance, again tied to the Songkran tradition central to Dai religious life.

For travelers interested in the religious architecture of Xishuangbanna, the Mengle Grand Buddha Temple is the most ambitious single-site introduction to Theravada Buddhism in the prefecture, and it pairs naturally with a visit to the older, more intimate General Buddhist Temple near Manting Park.
