The Italian Style Area, in the Hebei district of central Tianjin, is the best-preserved former Italian concession in China and one of the most distinctive historic districts in the city. Centered on a grid of streets lined with more than two hundred Mediterranean-style villas and apartment buildings from the early twentieth century, it offers visitors a rare glimpse of European-style town planning transplanted to a Chinese city, and it has become one of the most popular leisure and dining districts in modern Tianjin. For travelers interested in architecture, urban history, or simply in a relaxed evening out, it is a rewarding stop.

The district was developed in the early twentieth century, when this part of Tianjin was established as an Italian concession, and the villas, squares, and streetscapes were built in a range of Mediterranean styles, with stucco walls, terracotta roofs, arcaded loggias, and ornamental detailing that recall Italian towns of the period. After a long period of decline and partial redevelopment, the surviving buildings have been restored and adapted into restaurants, cafes, bars, shops, and small cultural venues, with the most photogenic corners clustered around the central square named after Marco Polo.

For most visitors, the main pleasure is a slow walk through the streets and squares, pausing for coffee, a meal, or a drink on one of the many outdoor terraces, and looking at the architecture. Afternoons draw a steady stream of shoppers and sightseers, while evenings are the most popular time, when the restaurants and bars fill up, the lights come on, and the streets take on a more festive, lively character. Spring and early autumn are the most pleasant seasons for outdoor seating and photography.

A typical visit takes one to two hours, longer for travelers who stop for a meal or a drink, and the district is small enough to be combined easily with other central Tianjin sights. The Italian Style Area sits close to the Haihe River, the Ancient Culture Street, and the Porcelain House, which makes it easy to fold into a wider day or evening of sightseeing, and for many visitors it is one of the most memorable faces of contemporary Tianjin.
