Zhaozhou Bridge, also known as Anji Bridge and locally as the Great Stone Bridge, is one of the most celebrated ancient structures in China and a landmark of world engineering history, located in Zhao County south of Shijiazhuang. Built around the year six hundred during the Sui dynasty to the design of the master craftsman Li Chun, it is the world's oldest open-spandrel segmental arch bridge, a title that gives it an outsized place in the global history of engineering. For travelers with even a passing interest in history, architecture, or science, it is the single most important stop near Shijiazhuang.

The bridge is a large single-arch stone structure spanning the Jiao River, with a graceful shallow arc that was astonishingly advanced for its era. The key innovation lies in the four small spandrel arches built into the shoulders of the main arch, two at each end, which reduce the bridge's weight, ease the pressure of floodwater, and lower the height of the roadway, all ideas that would not become common in bridge-building for many centuries afterward. The craftsmanship of the stone blocks, the precision of the joints, and the elegant curve of the structure explain why it has survived for more than fourteen centuries through floods, earthquakes, and the relentless traffic of North China.

Walking across the bridge today, you can see the worn ruts in the deck and the carved reliefs of dragons and marine creatures that decorate the railings, whose flowing lines are studied as masterpieces of early medieval sculpture. The surrounding park places the bridge in context with informative displays on its design, the life of Li Chun, and the centuries of engineering scholarship that the bridge has inspired, including the studies of the modern architectural historian Liang Sicheng, who helped secure its preservation in the twentieth century. A small museum on the site holds fragments and finds from the bridge's long history.

A visit typically takes one to two hours, including the bridge itself and the adjacent park and displays. Mornings and weekdays are quieter, and the bridge is photogenic at any time of year, with the surrounding willows and water making a particularly lovely scene in spring and autumn.

Zhaozhou Bridge sits about an hour's drive from downtown Shijiazhuang and is easily combined with other historical sites in the southern part of the region.
