The Jiangxi Provincial Museum, housed in its new venue on the eastern bank of the Gan River, is the principal museum of Jiangxi province and a natural starting point for visitors wanting to understand the region's long and unusually layered history. The building itself is designed as a stacked rectangular "treasure box," and its six floors of galleries make it one of the larger provincial museums in southern China, with extensive exhibition space devoted to the archaeology, art, and ethnography of Jiangxi from prehistory through the modern era.

The museum's permanent collections are drawn from across the province and cover the major themes that define Jiangxi's place in Chinese history. Galleries trace the region's ancient ceramic traditions — Jiangxi was home to some of China's most important kiln complexes, including Jingdezhen further north — alongside Buddhist sculpture, calligraphy, classical painting, and the material culture of the revolutionary period, in which Jiangxi played a central role. Temporary exhibitions regularly rotate artifacts from recent excavations, and the Haihunhou marquisate finds, discovered just outside Nanchang, are among the museum's signature draws when they are on display.

For foreign visitors, the museum offers something that individual historic sites in the region often cannot: a single, well-organized overview that connects the dots between Jiangxi's ancient pottery, its Tang- and Song-dynasty literary culture, its later porcelain trade, and its modern revolutionary significance. English labeling is present though uneven, so a visit rewards travelers who arrive with some background or who are content simply to look. Plan on at least half a day to do the collections justice, and check in advance which special exhibitions are open, since gallery rotations can affect what is available on any given day. The museum is easily combined with a walk along the riverside cultural district nearby.
