The Wei and Jin Brick Tombs at Xincheng, located east of Jiayuguan City, form one of the most remarkable and least-expected archaeological sites in the Gansu region. Spread across a broad area of desert, the site preserves more than a thousand underground burials dating from the Wei and Jin period roughly eighteen centuries ago, and it is celebrated for the vivid painted bricks that line many of the chambers, earning the complex the poetic nickname of the "Underground Gallery."

What makes these tombs so significant is their frescoed brickwork. The painted bricks depict scenes of daily life, farming, herding, hunting, cooking, music, and banqueting with a warmth and detail that is rarely preserved from this turbulent era of Chinese history, offering scholars and visitors alike a vivid window into the world of the landed families of the Hexi Corridor. The colors have survived remarkably well in the dry desert environment, and the scenes together form an informal visual encyclopedia of life along the early Silk Road.

Of the many tombs at the site, a group was excavated in the 1970s, and a small number are now open to the public, allowing visitors to descend a narrow stairway into the cool, dim chambers and view the painted bricks in situ. The experience of standing inside an intact painted tomb, surrounded by images that have waited in the dark for many centuries, is genuinely moving, and very different from viewing the same objects in a museum case.

The tombs are usually visited as a half-day side trip from Jiayuguan, and because the open section is limited and guided, it is worth checking access arrangements before you go. Photography may be restricted inside the chambers to help preserve the fragile pigments, but the memory of the frescoes lingers. For travelers with an interest in Silk Road history, ancient art, or archaeology, the Xincheng tombs are one of the most rewarding and atmospheric excursions in the Jiayuguan area.
